When you find yourself knee deep in mud or maybe you might need some kindling wood for a fire to get nice and toasty, here are a few important tools to remember to pack. Some military shovels, especially folding shovels, are sometimes referred to as entrenching tools as they are indispensable for constructing sheltering earthworks, but they offer a lot more value to the enterprising outdoorsmen. Not only are folding shovels compact and easy to transport, but they can be used to dig foundations, latrines, fire pits, and so much more. Some even have serrated or sharpened edges and so can be used to rough-work wood for making camp furniture. Make sure your pack has at least one folding shovel and a small camp axe among your knife and other tools.
