Military Canteens

Military and surplus canteens are typically made from one of three materials: plastic, stainless steel and aluminum. Plastic canteens are typically made from a plastic known as HDPE, or high-density polyethylene, and are extremely affordable and while remaining fairly durable. In addition to being low-cost, they’re also lightweight and flexible, though they’re not as strong as either of their metal counterparts. On the flipside, you have stainless steel and aluminum canteens. Aluminum models are lighter in weight and fairly resistant to corrosion, whereas stainless steel canteens are heavier and more durable. All in all, though, despite the fact that these are low-tech compared to modern hydration systems, they represent an affordable way to carry water in the woods or on the trail, and are durable enough to last a lifetime.
